I draw the human animal in all of our grace and monstrosity.
Jay Bailey's work focuses on the human figure through the depiction of gesture, motion, and loose form. Informed by the visual language unique to drawing, he utilizes mark-making, tone, and line to communicate on an emotive level which is aggressive, bestial, and carnal yet, graceful and poetic. His palate consists of earthy and fleshy hues which intertwine in a push and pull between figuration and abstraction.

His imagery alludes to figurative works throughout art history, fragmenting and layering forms to make a fabric of social and cultural references. He is informed by Goya's tormented figures, Kollwitz's heavy forms, Delacroix's erotic dramas, Mitchell's landscapes, and Bacon's abstractions. Jay Bailey's art is an unavoidable window into the contradictions of the male psyche in the modern era.

His current preoccupation is how modernity and the windows we use to view images has savaged the rendered form into incomplete measures and glitch video art.

Jay Bailey was born in Reno, Nevada in 1976. He has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Nevada in Reno, undertook post-baccalaureate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and has his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Australia. He is represented by JM Gallery in Dallas Texas.

He currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas with his wife and daughter.
