Julie Shunick Brown is a contemporary abstract painter exploring color and spatial relationships. Primarily acrylic, she employs a variety of media. Her paintings suggest places, memories, and emotions - reality not seen visually. They convey a sense of timelessness. Textural variety and fluid brushwork create movement and represent emotion. Absorbing her surroundings by slowing to observe people, events, and places enables her to represent life on her substrate. She searches for calm in the chaos of living, fueled by fascination with color. Experimenting with materials and methods, her work changes: evolving, evoking life itself. Change envelops. Past and future intermingle with present. Life challenges and inspires. Memory refines and perfects. This is reflected in her intuitive, multi-layered paintings.

"...it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope." Dr Seuss

Born in Nevada, she began painting as a child. Growing up in Arizona and Northern Virginia, she studied at The Corcoran School of Art. She graduated with honors from Arizona State University with a B.F.A. in Interior Design in 1975, and sporadically continued to study painting and drawing. In 2012, she left a long career with Procter and Gamble to focus full time on painting. Her studio is in the historic Continental Gin Building in Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the U.S. and Canada. See them at her studio by appointment or at Frisco Fine Art or McCall Fine Art, Santa Fe.
